Tips on proper Goldfish feeding
What and How Much they eat

Providing a balanced diet for your fish, should be the main aim in Goldfish feeding. A balanced diet should consist of proteins, carbohydrates, fat or oils, fibre, minerals, vitamins and trace elements, all present in the correct amounts. When you supply too much or too little of certain nutrients, it can lead to problems. Let’s discuss these nutrients a little more:

Proteins are a very important complex nitrogen containing compound. It`s very important for the growth of young fish, and the repair of damaged tissues. These can be supplied from sources like animal (e.g. fish meal) or plant (e.g. soya meal). 't store protein in there bodies, therefor it is important to supply a diet in Goldfish feeding with the necessary amounts of protein all the time.

The quality and quantity of these proteins are important, especially in young rapid growing fish. Proteins contain a number of amino acids and a good quality dried or flaked foods will be suitable to supply this.

Carbohydrates and Fats or Oils are energy producing foods and are available from various sources. These nutrients can be stored in the body by fish. Too much of this nutrient can have side effects for your fish.

Fibre is in both omnivorous and herbivorous diets a large roll player. This is also used in commercially prepared fish foods to add bulk to a concentrate and is mostly wasted when absorbed and dissolved.

Minerals, Vitamins and Trace elements are needed in only small amounts. They are however needed for a healthy diet. Some of our fresh foods are excellent sources of these nutrients. High quality prepared fish foods usually include these needed nutrients.

Commercially prepared foods are readily available for all kinds of aquarium fish, and can be classified as dried, frozen and freeze-dried variants.

Dried food variants are pellets, tablets, sticks and the most common, flakes. All these variants are easy obtainable and convenient to use. When buying a good quality brand, it can form the basis of the fish diet. When buying goldfish food, ask for a high nutritional food to be ideal, as cheaper foods might not have the nutrition needed for healthy fish.

Fish Food Question

by victoriagrey

I have 2 goldfish, 2 catfish, and 3 balloon mollies. I have been giving them 1/8 teaspoon of brine shrimp flakes, and 1/8 teaspoon of tropical flakes daily. Occasionally I will give 1/8 teaspoon of freeze dried bloodworms instead of the brine shrimp. My question is, is this enough? They always seem so hungry, should I feed them this twice a day? Or are they ok?
