I have a 55 gallon freshwater with plants

by Kestrel_42

As well as many community fish.
The keys to keeping plants happy are:
1. Be anal about doing your water changes. The plants need the water changed more often than your fish do. Do AT LEAST a 25% water change each week.
2. Pick a good substrate to put in the bottom of the tank. I like Flourite which I can get at my local aquarium stores. You want at least one pound of substrate per gallon of water (so for a 30 gallon tank, you'll need 30 lbs).
3. Make sure you have a good filter that offers both mechanical and chemical filtration

120 gallon tank - herp beginner - what reptile?

by dlgilbert4

Hi everyone,
I'm considering taking down my tropical freshwater aquarium and keeping a reptile of some sort. I'm a beginner when it comes to herps - I had a few green anoles and western fence lizards as a kid, but that's it. My tank measures 60" x 24" x 18" and is glass.
I have two basic ideas: (1) make a fancy planted setup, maybe even with a water feature, and keep several anoles and anything else that would be a good cohabitant, and (2) have a simple, easy-to-clean Astroturf setup for a snake or larger lizard.
I don't know if I'm handy enough to make a planted terrarium work in such a large tank
